World Choir Games Graz 2008 & BOCHK Bauhinia Bowl

Taking part in the world's largest choral competition in music history, the Senior Choir set off for the 5th World Choir Games Graz, Austria 2008 in early July, hoping to defend their title from the previous World Choir Games in Xiamen, China. Demonstrating their abilities and musicality to 7 internationally renowned jurors, the Choir was awarded a high score of 91.88 points, bringing home a gold medal and capturing the title of World Champion of Category W3: Young Male Choirs. In the first part of the World Choir Games 2008, our Senior Choir became the sole Chinese Champion among all other categories, with the flag of the People’s Republic of China hoisted to celebrate the glory.

Moreover, the Diocesan Schools Choral Society, comprising 29 singers from Diocesan Boys' School and Diocesan Girls’ School, participated in Category W17: Musica Sacra – Open Category, and was awarded the gold medal with 88.38 points – the second highest score in the category, triumphing over the remaining 17 choral finalists.

Congratulations to all Diocesan choristers who have made this possible. Special thanks must be given to the teachers-in-charge Mr. R. Cheng and Mr. F. Shuen for their hard work and unfailing encouragement.

The Bank of China (Hong Kong) Bauhinia Bowl Award 2007 - 2008 Prize Presentation Ceremony was held at Pui Ching Middle School on 25 June 2008. As various sports teams triumphed in their respective events and competitions, we recaptured the Champion title of the Bauhinia Bowl Award with 341 points after standing as runners-up for 7 years. Congratulations to all who have contributed to such a remarkable success.

Emergency Appeal – Sichuan Earthquake

We would like to express our sadness for those who have perished and those who continue to suffer from the devastating effects of the May 12 Sichuan Earthquake. We hereby extend our prayers and thoughts to them.

To date, the School and the Student Council have received donations from parents, teachers and students which amount to $625,982.70, but because of the immensely demanding situation at hand, more help is needed.

We appeal to you to give what you can to help the victims of the Sichuan earthquake rebuild their lives.

獨立電影《未央歌》放映會暨「地水南音」表演

《未央歌》是以廣東音樂「地水南音」為主題的純愛電影，由熱血導演鄺保威和林瀚明先生執導，雖是小本製作，但得到多位影壇前輩及文化界支持，並以高清拍攝，是兩位導演花盡多年心血的力作。

「地水南音」是指盲人唱的南音，是傳統廣東粵語說唱曲藝之一，於上個世紀一度流行於珠江三角洲一帶，現在卻被逐漸淘汰。香港現時懂得這門技藝的人已不多，是次表演的唐小燕女士更是碩果僅存的「師娘」，希望大家可以對這快將消失的中國南方傳統藝術花一點心思，藉着「未央歌」欣賞這獨特的技藝。

是次放映會及表演詳情：

日期：五月二十一日(星期三) 時間：下午五時至五時三十分，茶敍下午五時三十分，唐小燕女士「地水南音」表演下午六時正，電影放映下午七時四十分，映後座談會 (出席人士: 鄺保威導演，麻一葦小姐(女主角)，唐小燕女士) 地點：拔萃男書院禮堂(不設訪客泊車)

DBS Classical Concert & DBS HomeComing Concert 2008

DBS "Classical" Concert 2008 and DBS "HomeComing" Concert 2008 presented by the DBS Music Department, DBS Parent-Teacher Association, DBS Alumni Parents' Association, Diocesan School Old Boys’ Association and DBS Fund Raising Committee were successfully held on 3 and 4 July 2008 respectively.

Thanks must be given to all supporting units including our patrons and sponsors, the Headmaster Mr. Terence Chang, our teachers-in-charge Mr. R. Cheng and Mr. F. Shuen and all those who have helped in the process of the concert. Special thanks must also be given to our musicians who have practised so hard to make this concert a success. We are looking forward to seeing you next year.

French Film Showing and crêpe party

In order to promote and celebrate the French May Arts Festival, the DBS French Club and the DBS Film & Video Society will screen the French Film Le Diner de Cons (Diner Game with english subtitles, with two surprise shots) on 8th May 2008 at four pm in the DBS School Hall. Crêpes, a type of French food from Brittany (West of France), will be served. Students are welcome to bring other French delicacies to share with our guests.

Global Day of Prayer 2008 - Mission Sharing Session

Mrs. Linda Ma (wife of Mr. Frederick Ma Si-hang, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development), founder and director of the Citywide Renewal, called for the first Global Day of Prayer (GDOP) in Hong Kong in 2003. The GDOP is a Christian gathering in Hong Kong, the purpose of which is to promote unity among all the Christian churches, schools, marketplace, and different sectors. The mission of GDOP is to call Christians from all nations to unite in repentance and prayer, and to work as God’s servants for the blessing and healing of Hong Kong. This year’s GDOP will be held on 11th May 2008 (Pentecost Sunday) at the Hong Kong Stadium. Admission will start at 1:00pm and the official meeting will commence at 3:00pm. Tickets can be obtained through the School by filling in the following the reply slip attached.

All teachers, parents and students are cordially invited to join Mrs. Ma’s mission sharing session in the Lecture Hall at 5:30pm on 2nd May 2008. Light refreshments will be provided. The School hopes that, together with teachers, parents, and students, we can work towards a common mission to love, help and uplift each other.
