Since its conception in 2005, the Mentoring Scheme has become one of the most important programmes organized by the Careers Office. As mentors, our distinguished alumni have provided exceedingly generous support to the scheme. The mentors have instilled in our Grade 11 mentees their valuable wisdom, and given them much support in pursuing their academic and career goals.

The Mentoring Scheme has long been one of the most important events of the Careers Office. In the afternoon of 26th January, 2019, our mentors from all walks of life once again gathered together to share their invaluable knowledge and insights in the Student Activity Room. Our G11 and 12 students were paired with one or more old boys (mentors) to obtain fruitful advice on specific careers fields. The event has proven itself highly meaningful and helpful for students in pursuit of their future endeavours. The Tea Reception was a huge success thanks to the cooperation of all the mentors and mentees who have taken part in the tea reception.
This year, the event kicked off with warm a welcoming speech delivered by Mrs Tso, the Careers Mistress, followed by the commencement of the event by Mr David Wong, representative of DSOBA. This was followed by a session of interaction between mentors and mentees sharing their opinions.
Our mentors have pursued careers in various fields after graduating from DBS and have gained invaluable experience. On that day, they have returned to DBS to provide our G11 and G12 mentees with fruitful information about their daily routine of work and the working environment, sharing with them the ideal qualities required for pursuing their desired career paths and the preparations required for success in their career fields.
The tea reception was a fruitful afternoon for both mentees and mentors. Having actively engaged in a thorough conversation with experienced professionals, the mentees will equip themselves with such extensive knowledge and will be able to make educated decisions about their future choices. Both the mentors and the mentees will definitely find this experience enlightening and thought-provoking. We appreciate the enthusiastic response which we have received and hope that next year’s tea reception will be an even more rewarding experience for all participants.

As is the case year after year, the school hall welcomes back our old boys for the annual Mentoring Scheme Tea Reception. In the afternoon of 13th January, 2018, our mentors from different walks of life joined together to share their invaluable knowledge and insights. Our current G11 boys, who sought to learn more of their desired studies and career fields through face-to-face communication with the best of the best, will certainly find this event meaningful and helpful in pursuit of their bright prospects.
The event was kick started by a well-informed speech delivered by Mrs Tso, the Careers Mistress. Followed by the commencement, a few students who have partaken in the Diocesan Apprenticeship Programme were invited to share their experiences and evaluations in different workplace environments. Subsequently, students with similar aspirations formed groups with their corresponding mentors and the discussion began. Amid the two sessions of interaction, it is evident that our mentees demonstrate passion and devotion in approaching their mentors to ask questions regarding their interested fields, their concerns over academic requirements for their expected faculty, life in university and the future career life, to name a few.
Our mentors, on the other hand, were also more than willing to detail their insights and bestow their knowledge to their junior counterparts. Intermittently, they were eager to explore the reasons why our mentees opt for the particular field of study.
We are very thankful to all mentors who have spent a few hours to talk with our boys, as well as all mentees who have shown enthusiasm in understanding more about different industries. We wish to prepare the Tea Reception session even better next year for our juniors.

Mentoring Scheme Tea Reception 2017
As is the case year after year, the school hall welcomes back our old boys for the annual Mentoring Scheme Tea Reception. In the afternoon of 14th January, 2017, our mentors of various ages convened on a mission to offer their expertise and educate our current G11 boys, who sought to learn more about their desired study and career fields through face-to-face communication with the best of the best. This 4-hour event will certainly prove to be useful in our students’ future endeavors.
The event was ceremoniously initiated by DSOBA Committee member Mr. Edwin Morris, who delivered an eloquent speech, after which the interaction between the different generations of DBS boys officially began. The two rounds of discussions saw our mentees earnestly and zealously ask their mentors questions regarding their respective fields. Over some light snacks and beverages, our mentees expressed their concern over academic requirements for their subject of choice, life in university and beyond, compatibility between their personality and their potential future career, amongst other topics.
Our mentors, although bombarded with questions, patiently and extensively responded to every one, sharing their insights and imparting their wisdom to their junior counterparts. Occasionally, they would probe our mentees by asking for reasons why they chose their field, embodying the message conveyed in Mr. Morris’ speech: mentees must get to know themselves and examine where their interests lie before they make their decision.
Thanks must be given to all the mentors and mentees who have participated in the event. The Mentoring Scheme significantly shows how our old boys pass the torch of DBS, so that our students can feel the togetherness of the DBS family. The Tea Reception could not have been such a great success without all our mentors’ and helpers’ hard work and effort paid. We will take the comments below to heart and strive to make next year’s Mentoring Scheme Tea Reception even better.

Mentoring Scheme Tea Reception 2016
On 16 January, 2016, the annual Mentoring Scheme Tea Reception was successfully held. The Tea Reception was a resounding success thanks to all the mentors and mentees who have taken their time to take part in the event.
The numerous mentors who have participated in this event are none other than our alumni. Since leaving DBS, they have started careers in various fields and have gained invaluable experience first hand. Now, they have returned to DBS to provide our current students with information about their respective disciplines, give advice on the requirements of said disciplines, and prepare them for the road ahead. Equipped with such extensive knowledge, the mentees are now able to make educated decisions about their future.
This year, the Tea Reception kicked off with a speech delivered by the current DSOBA Chairman, Mr. Jerry Chang. He enthusiastically gave all the participants a warm welcome, and officially initiated the event. This was followed by a session of chatting between mentors and mentees over some snacks and drinks. After that, everybody engaged in a serious round of discussions on a number of topics: the desirable qualities for getting into certain fields, the preparations required for a successful career, the working environment, and how well it pays.
This was a productive and eventful afternoon for both mentees and mentors. Having actively engaged in a thorough conversation with experienced professionals, the mentees will definitely find this experience inspiring and helpful. Having shared some of their insight with the future leaders of society, the mentors will be glad to know that they have contributed to theitr alma mater. This was certainly a day to remember.

Mentoring Scheme Tea Reception 2015
On 17 January, 2015, participants of the Mentoring Scheme were brought together for an afternoon of food and discussion. From 2pm onwards, there was much excitement in the school hall as most of our mentees met their mentors face-to-face and had interaction for the first time. Our mentees also were delighted to make new acquaintances and learn from a broader circle of mentors.
A sharing session was followed by the opening ceremony, in which participants formed small groups for discussion. Our mentees approached the mentors enthusiastically with questions regarding their career, and asked for advices on career choices and management. The mentors explained clearly about the prospectus of their career and also shared various valuable experiences they had as a student and as a member in their respective work field. The general atmosphere was amicable and full of enthusiasm.
The tea reception finally concluded at 5:30pm. As the participants left our school hall, they commented that apart from allowing them to learn more about their dream career, this event has also bonded fellow Diocesans closer than ever.
The Careers Office wishes to express its deepest gratitude to all mentors who have graciously given their time and effort to inspire our mentees. Thanks must be given to those who have made this event possible and rewarding .We appreciate the enthusiastic response which we have received, and hope that next year’s tea reception will be an even more rewarding experience for all participants.

Mentoring Scheme Tea Reception 2014
The Tea Reception of this year's Mentoring Scheme was successfully held on the 18th January, 2015. It was an extremely successful event – thanks must be given to the mentors and mentees who took their time to participate.
The Mentoring Scheme is one of the highlighted events organized by the Careers Office, and aims to provide G11 students with an opportunity to obtain various career advice. In the scheme, each student (mentee) is paired with one or more old boys (mentor), and over the afternoon, had the chance to talk to each other.
Throughout the course of the Mentoring Scheme, mentees and their respective mentors engaged in lively discussions, with the mentees sharing their different ideas and prospects regarding their future, and the mentors sharing the vast and varied experiences they have. Our boys exhibited a very encouraging zeal to know all about different careers, and the different qualities, preparations and subtleties as needed. On the other hand, the mentors gave invaluable advice to their mentees, and took their ideas one step further, enabling them to have a clearer direction regarding their career and future.
Mentors also taught mentees interview strategies and gave résumé tips to further boost their admissions process into the university they are aiming for. The mentors also shared remarkable experiences in studying and working, adding a personal touch to their interaction.
Through conversing and discussing face-to-face with their respective mentors, our boys have acquired newfound insight on their desired career, and are now much more readily prepared to make their career decisions.
The Careers Office wishes to express its gratitude to all the mentors who have taken their precious time to attend this event. Our thanks must also go to everyone whose participation made this possible. We appreciate the overwhelming number of participants in the Scheme, as well as the constructive comments that will certainly make the event even better next year.

Our mentors gave a series of talks about particular career fields, equipping oneself well for entering esteemed universities, and also
preparing an effective résumé. The mentees found the talks extremely helpful owing to the genuineness with which they were presented.
This was followed by a sharing session, in which participants formed small groups for discussion. Our mentees approached the mentors with questions regarding the talks, and asked for advice on career choices and management. The mentors responded with clear, candid assessments of their career fields, and also shared various notable experiences they had in both the campus and workplace. The general atmosphere was amicable and enthusiastic.
Old boys are an indispensable part of the DBS heritage, as they possess the wisdom as well as the spirit of DBS tradition. Spending a whole Saturday afternoon chatting with them is a precious opportunity I have never imagined, and this year’s tea reception is more than a success, with mentees taking the initiative, and mentors pouring all they have. The whole event could only be described as pleasurable and interactive.

Mentoring Scheme Tea Reception 2010
One of the reasons DBS boys are among the best in the world is because we have over a hundred years of history behind us, pushing us to achieve new heights. And the most obvious signifier of that history is the Mentoring Scheme. Every year, the Careers Office arranges for over a hundred Old Boys to contact current DBS students and give them the benefit of their experience in various career fields. Together, they map out the paths to success of DBS boys, preparing a new generation to face the challenges of the future.
On the 16th of January, 2010, the mentors and mentees participating in the Mentoring Scheme came together at DBS. Over drinks and food, the mentors and mentees shared an afternoon of discussing future paths and the mapping out of success. We were privileged to have Mr. Desmond Yip, Chairman of the DBSOBA to deliver a welcoming address to the assembled mentors and mentees on that day. Mr. Yip noted the sacrifices the Old Boys had made in such a homecoming, all in the name of sharing knowledge.
This year, the Tea Reception was a great success. Mentors and mentees discussed avidly the topics that so concern our higher form boys, such as academic prospects and career paths.
We could not have achieved such a success with the Tea Reception without the wholesome participation and commitment by the mentors and mentees. On behalf of the Careers Office, we would like to thank all participants of the Tea Reception. We are looking forward to the Mentoring Scheme next year.

On 10th January 2009, mentors and mentees assembled in the school hall and started the discussions. Provided with light refreshments, mentors and mentees spent a valuable afternoon talking about the careers paths and future planning.
We are glad to have Mr. Desmond Yip, President of DSOBA, to deliver a welcoming speech before the commencement of the Tea Reception. Mr. Yip again appreciated the homecoming of the old boys to share their experiences in career and future planning.
As requested, we extended the sharing session to allow more time for discussions. Mentors responded enthusiastically to mentees’ enquiries. Both parties participated actively and engaged in a wide scope of topics ranging from academic preparation to career prospects.
Had it not been the joint efforts of mentors and mentees, the tea reception would not have been a real success. The tea reception was a remarkable experience, and we are all looking forward to the Mentoring Scheme next year.

Old boys are an indispensable part of the DBS heritage, for they possess the wisdom and spirit of DBS tradition. Spending a whole Saturday afternoon with them chatting is an opportunity I have never imagined, and this year’s tea reception is more than a success, with mentees taking the initiative, and mentors pouring all they have, the whole event was carried out in a pleasurable and interactive atmosphere.
Students had been encouraged to tour around different tables meeting not only their own mentors, and not only restricted to their interested career, and delightfully more in-depth sharing sessions were created. Personally, I have made up my mind to take Medicine as my career, but other than gathering information about further studies and career opportunities in the field, I have also learnt about brand new stuff like alternative medicine, that everything affects one’s diseases, and consequently the cure to each and every same disease but unique patients.
All in all, it was a remarkable afternoon that I would never forget, for more than what I have learnt from books, which seemed lesser to me afterwards, I have just learnt that more from my seniors in as great a event as such.

I was genuinely impressed by the information and lively descriptions of personal experiences included in the presentations. Every one of the old boys was a big help in giving advice on different processes we will need to go through to enter a good university and be successful in life.

It was exciting to meet with so many DBS graduates who now have become leaders in their respective fields. Listening to their advice was analogous to being given a head start in all that is to come, and for this reason I find the reception delighting. Yet the greatest aspect of the reception was to meet my mentor Albert in person and thank him for his kind guidance and support. This is a very worthwhile event which I believe will one day become a venerable tradition.

The tea reception provided me with insights in my interested field. Though my mentors were absent with apologies, I still obtained valuable information on the choice of careers and the characters suitable for a certain career. In fact, it is great for me to know more about other fields even I may no enter those careers in the future. Society nowadays demands students who have inter-disciplinary knowledge, and the tea reception equipped me for this. Therefore I would also like to be a mentor after I graduate from DBS, so that I can pass my experience and knowledge to my juniors.
