DBS Fee Remission and Scholarships Schemes (2023-2024)

1. Introduction

  1. DBS Fee Remission Scheme: Need-based
The School adopts a strictly need-blind student admission policy to ensure that no qualified students will be deprived of receiving an education at DBS due to financial reasons. The School has a Fee Remission Scheme for eligible students which is implemented by the Student Welfare Committee. Eligible students will be offered a full or partial fee remission, i.e. 25%, 50%, 75% or 100%, of the school fees.

  2. DBS Scholarships Scheme: Merit-based
The School also offers scholarships to students who have demonstrated outstanding achievements or possess potential in the areas of academics, sports, music and other extra-curricular activities. The members of the Awards Subcommittee of the Admissions Office deliver relevant information, solicit nominations and select recipients for these scholarships. They are also responsible for reviewing the awards selection process and making modifications annually.
Students who benefit from any of the above-mentioned financial assistance schemes may be partially exempt from the Boarding School fee on a pro-rata basis. Besides, an Endowment Fund (DBS Foundation Limited) has been set up to provide other means of financial assistance.

In practice, the School may be more flexible than indicated by the above outline of the system according to different situations and student needs. For example, the School can split the 50 full sports scholarships into 20 full (100% fee remission) and 60 (50% fee remission) half prizes to maximize the number of awardees.

The actual amount of scholarship is based on the level of assistance, as expressed in the percentage of fee remission, i.e. 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, of the school fee chargeable in the particular school year.

4. Procedures for Nomination and Application

  1. P.E Teachers, Coaches, Conductors, Teachers-In-Charge of the extra-curricular activities (ECAs), Subject Teachers and Admissions Officers can nominate a candidate for scholarships during the admissions process. Auditions or Sports Trials will be held for fair and accurate assessments.
  2. Sports Masters, Head of Music Department and Teachers-In-Charge will submit the proposed list of awardees to Deans. Deans will gather, examine and process the info, then recommend the final list to the Headmaster for his approval.
  3. Candidates applying to G7 to G12 who have passed the entrance examinations or oral interviews are eligible to apply for a merit-based scholarship. Applicants can submit an official letter to the Headmaster, Deans or Teachers-In-Charge with relevant supporting documents such as photocopies of certificates issued by HKSMSA, HKSSF and/or ABRSM etc. To allow flexibility and efficiency, verbal applications are also acceptable as necessary.
  4. Current DBS students with potential and/or outstanding achievements are eligible to apply for the above-mentioned scholarship schemes by following the above procedures.
  5. Regular meetings or discussions will be held for Deans and Teachers-In-Charge to update and exchange ideas regarding the performances and conduct of the scholarship awardees.
  6. The maximum grant of DBS scholarships will not exceed 100% of school fees, which includes the sum of various scholarships granted to a student.

5. Review Criteria

  1. The overall performances of the awardees of these scholarships will be reviewed annually by the members of the Awards Subcommittee. Meetings or interviews may be conducted with students and/or parents. The continuity of the scholarships will be assessed based on the following criteria:
  2. Deans and Teachers-In-Charge will also conduct on-site inspections to observe the actual performances of the students during competitions, training sessions and rehearsals, etc. to develop comprehensive evaluations of the awardees.
  3. Students may be granted scholarships covering the fees for 1, 2 or 3 academic years etc. at the discretion of the School.

6. Appeal System

Should their application be rejected, students may appeal to the Headmaster, Deans or Teachers-In-Charge in writing. Applications and appeals are considered on a rolling basis throughout the academic year.

7. Additional Guidelines

  1. Academics Scholarships
The School offers academic scholarships to three categories of eligible students: high achievers or top scholars with outstanding results in the internal mid-term and/or final examinations; elite scholars from the Secondary One admissions or transfers and students participating in ECAs directly related to academics.
  2. Music Scholarships
Scholars are expected: to meet the 90% attendance requirement in all participating ensembles in the Music Department; to participate in instrumental ensembles and musical events as assigned by the Department; and to attend and pass the orchestra audition. Scholars in the symphony orchestra are expected to attend and pass the blind audition. All scholars are expected to display good conduct in all school lessons and activities, achieving a minimum conduct grade of B.
  3. Sports Scholarships
The establishment of the Sports Scholarship is to recognise the achievement of athletes who have devoted much of their effort to the School in their own sports and to boost the morale of DBS spirit. Nominees need not necessarily be all-round athletes, but must achieve a leading role and significant performance in one single sport.
